Martin & Martin’s Packing Guide
1)DISPOSE & DECLUTTER
At Martin & Martin Removals, we always recommend starting your packing process by decluttering—disposing of or donating any items you no longer need or want to take with you.
Over time, households accumulate many belongings, and moving is the perfect opportunity to reassess what’s essential. There are several ways to part with unwanted items, including selling them on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or eBay, donating them to family, friends, or charities, or arranging a house clearance for larger disposals.
Martin & Martin’s TOP TIP: Facebook Marketplace is a fantastic platform for selling or even giving away items for free! Many charities are also happy to accept well-cared-for second-hand goods.
2)START PACKING
When preparing for a move, it’s essential to start packing as early as possible. While key furniture pieces like beds and tables may be needed until the final days, we recommend packing miscellaneous items—such as kids’ toys, candles, vases, and shoes—into boxes well in advance to ensure a smoother moving process. Delays in packing can lead to a longer and more stressful moving day.
To keep things organised and efficient, use storage boxes for most items and place anything that doesn’t fit in a box into black bags for easy transport.
Martin & Martin’s TOP TIP: Start packing early and tackle small tasks each day to avoid last-minute stress. Trust us—it works!
3)LABELLING & MARKING
If you’re packing your own home, we strongly recommend keeping items from different rooms separate and labelling every box clearly. For example, kitchen items should go in boxes labeled “Kitchen,” and everything from Bedroom 1 should be packed into boxes marked “Bedroom 1.” This not only helps the removal team place your belongings in the correct rooms but also saves you valuable time and effort when unpacking.
Martin & Martin’s TOP TIP: For glassware, plates, and sentimental items, be sure to label the box “FRAGILE” so both your household and the removal team handle them with extra care. Although the team at Martin & Martin Removals treats every box with caution, it’s always helpful to highlight delicate items!
4)FOOD
As you prepare for your move, we recommend purchasing only the essential items you need. For safety reasons, Martin & Martin Removals cannot transport perishable foods or move your fridge/freezer while it still contains items. To avoid any inconvenience or wasted time, please ensure all perishable goods are emptied before moving day.
Martin & Martin’s TOP TIP: Buying only what you need in the days leading up to your move helps minimise waste and makes the transition smoother!
5)UPDATE US!
If there are any changes to your moving day or the services you require, please let us know as early as possible.
